Crucufiers at the Episcopal School of Knoxville.\Episcopal School Grows on Every Score

The Episcopal School of Knoxville began its ninth school year Wednesday, Aug. 16, with 250 students, 45 teachers and a new athletic director, Charlie Watson.

The K-8 school has grown by 41 students since this time last year. Jay Secor, Episcopal School headmaster, cited increased visibility of the school in the community as one reason for the nearly 20 percent jump in enrollment since this time last year. “There’s an enhanced awareness of the quality educational, spiritual and athletic components of our school,” he said.

Changes in the past year have included:

• The opening of a new $1.1 million, 10,000 square-foot middle school building with a wireless computer environment.
• The refurbishing of the lower school computer lab and the opening of a  portable middle school lab with 22 wireless laptops, plus two interactive SmartBoards, allowing students to learn web design, desktop publishing and video editing along with basic computer skills.
• French and Spanish classes taught on all grade levels.
• A new soccer/football field and a tennis court built by parent donations, expanding the Episcopal School’s ability to host athletic events.
• Under Charlie Watson, former soccer and flag football coach, The Episcopal School will soon complete its fall sports season, including flag football, tennis, cross country and volleyball. The school now offers one of most challenging area  cross country courses. About ninety-two percent of ESK students play sports.

The Episcopal School emphasizes both academic excellence, with small class size and an interdisciplinary curriculum, and a community spirit.

Last year, 85 percent of Episcopal School seventh-graders qualified to participate in the Duke Talent Identification Program, which is extended to the top 10 percent of students taking the TCAP exams. Of the 10 students who chose to participate, half qualified for state recognition, said Guidance Counselor Lois Ross. She said that four fifths of  Episcopal fourth and fifth graders qualify for the Duke Talent Search for fourth and fifth graders.

The school begins each day with chapel services for all students which emphasize God’s love for all and each child’s opportunities for servanthood. The school also supports a host of new and longstanding interscholastic activities such as Youth Legislature, Model United Nations, and Destination Imagination. This year the school has begun a Robotics Club and a club for students interested in filmmaking.

The Episcopal School is located at 950 Episcopal School Way off Lovell Road in West Knoxville. The school is affiliated with the Episcopal Church but students do not have to subscribe to any particular faith to attend. The school actively seeks children of diverse faith and background.
