Kindergarten at ESK

Philosophy
We Believe:
All children learn differently.
Children learn best when learning is meaningful, interesting and functional.
Children learn best when they make their own choices.
Children learn best in a community of learners in a non-competitive environment.
Children learn best by talking and doing.
As teachers we prepare the environment for children to learn through active exploration and interaction with adults, other children, and materials. We encourage active participation of children through themes, projects, and learning centers. Our goal is to promote challenging, fun, rewarding, and meaningful learning.
" A Day in the Life"
A kindergartener's day at ESK begins with Chapel at 8:15. Lasting about 15 minutes, this chapel service which is presented in the Anglican/Episcopalian tradition allows all of our students to begin their day with a positive message. In addition to Bible stories and songs, this is the time when school announcements are made, congratulations are offered for recent successes, and birthdays are recognized.
Following chapel, kindergarteners remain in Googe Hall where they participate in SMART Activities. These activities focus on developing both fine and gross motor skills and prepare both bodies and minds for the academic morning.
Morning roatations begin around 9:00 a.m. Children rotate through 6 centers (3 Language and 3 Math centers). Each classroom is set up with two teacher-directed centers and one independent group. Once morning routines are complete it is time for lunch in the Dining Hall. Teachers and students enjoy lunch together in a family style atmosphere. One teacher is seated at each table to assist and monitor lunch room etiquette. Following lunch the children participate in outdoor play, weather permitting.
Afternoons are filled with enrichment classes: Foreign language (French or Spanish), Music, Art, Library, Physical Education, Guidance, and Religion. Once completing enrichment activities, students spend time with hands-on work stations and manipulatives rather than paper/pencil centers.
The school day ends at 3:00 p.m.
