HARRIET TUBMAN
Biography of Harriet Tubman

4harr12b_3.jpgHarriet Tubman was born in 1820 (her name was Araminta Ross then). She led over three hundred slaves to freedom! She led them on the Underground Railroad. The Underground Railroad was not a real railroad. It was a group of people who helped runaway slaves. When Harriet was thirteen, she got hit in the head with an iron weight trying to protect another slave from the angry overseer. It crushed part of her skull and she had problems from it for the rest of her life. She escaped to freedom in 1849 and lived and worked in Pennsylvania. But soon, she started going back to the south and helping other slaves escape. She also worked for the Union army during the Civil War. After the war, she settled in Auburn, New York and still worked to help black people. She died on March 10, 1913.
